Choose Varying Lengths

Whether you’re layering a couple of simple chains or experimenting with three, four or more different styles, the key is to give each necklace the space it needs to breathe. To avoid ending up with a tangled mess, keep the rule of three in mind:

1. Start with a choker-style necklace. Chokers are around 14""-16"" in length, so they fit closely against the throat. A delicate to mid-weight chain choker is a great base to build on.

2. Your next layer should be at least 18"" in length. A bar necklace or a name necklace with a plate centered along the chain works well in this position. You might also select a small pendant or solitaire, but the bottom of the drop on this second necklace should have adequate space away from the third.

3. For the final necklace in your trio, look for something between 20"" and 24"" long. A pendant necklace is perfect for this look. Maybe add your favourite cross or heart to the mix - it's up to you. The varying lengths of the styles you choose will give you a fashion-forward look.
Mix Metals & Materials

Mix Metals & Materials

There are no rules that say all your necklaces need to be one colour, like sterling silver or yellow gold. Mixing metals and metal colours is a great way to make your stack unique, but be conscious of how they blend together. The general rule of thumb is to pick a dominant metal and use another colour as a subtle complement. For example, choose yellow gold for all your chains, but slip in a dainty silver pendant on one of the longer chains to make an unexpected statement.

If you want to add a little colour to the overall look, gemstones accents can be as bold or as understated as you choose. Consider incorporating your birthstone or a significant anniversary gemstone to add meaning to your stack.
Add Personal Touches

Add Personal Touches

The beauty of layering chain necklaces with other necklace is there are plenty of ways to create a look that’s all your own. Even if you follow our tips and tricks, your stack will be unlike anyone else’s as you evolve your signature look and experiment with adding your own personal touches.

As you build your stack, consider adding a personalized style like a name necklace, a custom engraved bar necklace or a birthstone pendant. Incorporating a vintage piece or a family heirloom can also be a great way to give your stack a little more depth and meaning.

Don’t forget, your stack doesn’t have to be the same for every outfit and every occasion. Experiment with different looks to find the necklace lengths and styles that work for your neckline and mood. The sky is the limit when it comes to layering necklaces, so have fun with it!
