Type of Band   

Deciding on a men’s wedding band may seem like a no-brainer, but there are actually a few different band styles to choose from. The most common include:

  • Classic/Plain: Timeless and traditional, a classic style is a plain band with no stones, carvings or other details.  
  • Embellished: Instead of the classic smooth, curved edge, an embellishedband may feature a bevelled design with milgrain or other detail along the edges. The extra detailing makes the style a little more unique.

  • Tungsten: Durable and scratch-resistant, tungsten is growing in popularity as an alternative metal for men’s wedding bands. Available in white, grey and black, tungsten is for the groom who is leaning toward a more modern style. It is also hypoallergenic and more affordable than gold and platinum.
  • Sterling Silver: Not only is sterling silver very affordable but it’s also hypoallergenic. While it’s a little more prone to scratches than other metals, it can be easily repaired and resized making it a smart choice for either a temporary ring or for a groom that doesn’t intend to wear it often.
  • Titanium: Strong and durable yet lightweight, a titanium wedding band is designed to stand the test of time. While it isn’t as easy to resize as other metals, it is an affordable choice.
  • Platinum: The most expensive of all the metal options, platinum is also hypoallergenic and extremely durable.
  • Stainless Steel: Durable and affordable, a stainless-steel wedding band is a low-maintenance choice.

Finish

The finish of a ring refers to the treatment of the outer surface of the metal band. Some finishes work better with certain metals but ultimately, the best finish comes down to personal preference.    

  • Polished: Metal surface is buffed into a reflective shine. Will pick up knicks and scratches over time and develop a worn patina that has a vintage vibe.  
  • Satin: Smooth to the touch, a satin finish is not reflective like polished. Perfect for anyone who wants smoothness without shininess.  
  • Matte: A sandblasted matte finish is smooth and even and can be applied on top of carved or textured surfaces. It will require touch-ups to maintain the matte finish.  
  • Brushed: Adds a directional pattern to the surface of the ring. Will require touching up over time. Popular with tungsten rings.  
  • Combination: Polished and matte sections are combined to create a unique ring with varying textures and finishes.  
  • Hammered: Offers a rustic, dimpled look that varies from piece to piece. Perfect for disguising the knicks and scratches that happen over time. 

Fit 

If you’re wearing your wedding band every day, it goes without saying that you want it to be comfortable. Everyone will have their own preferences, but the general rule is that the ring should slide over your knuckle with a little bit of resistance and fit snugly on your finger. You don’t want to struggle to get the ring on and off, but you also don’t want it so loose that it will easily fall off. There are two styles that you may have to choose between that will affect the fit of your ring. While they are technically the same size, they are measured differently.

  • Standard fit:Flat interior that typically fits flush against your skin. To size, the circumference of your finger is taken and matched to the right size on a chart. 
  • Comfort fit:Curved inside edge that allows the ring to slip on and off your finger more easily. Measurements are taken from the centerline of the ring where it will be tightest against the skin. Typically, the edge of a comfort fit ring will measure slightly larger than the center line.
